“In The Midnight Hour”-

Sidmel worked with the family of the legendary Wilson Pickett to create “In The Midnight Hour: The Music of Wilson Pickett”, a jukebox musical that was presented at Morehouse College. She also worked with the Wilson Pickett Legacy to create an accompanying exhibit on the life of Wilson Pickett that was mounted at the Auburn Avenue Research Library in Atlanta. That exhibit and production is expected to be part of an upcoming national tour.

New You Magazine decided to feature Sidmel after she went through a dramatic physical transformation. After a lifelong struggle with her weight, she finally was able to lose more than 160 pounds after her doctor forcefully told her that she was morbidly obese. Sidmel never allowed her weight to stand in her way since many of her greatest accomplishments were done when she was overweight. But now, she feels like her life is significantly different after making a life-or-death decision.

Sidmel was elected as the first female president of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) in 1991. The following year, Ebony Magazine honored her and her organization in their annual list of America’s Most Powerful and Influential African Americans. It was the first time in the history of NABJ that the historic magazine recognized the organization.

NABJ attracted national headlines under the leadership of President Sidmel Estes. The organization issued a landmark report documenting racial problems exhibited by the nation’s news media both within and outside of the newsroom during the urban disturbances of the 90s. The report was the first examination of its kind to take a hard look at media practices since the issuance of the famed Kerner Commission Report.
